Dyson Daniels is setting the stage for a historic defensive season, and the buzz around him potentially winning Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) is growing.
As of now, Daniels leads the NBA with 88 deflections, far ahead of the second-place De’Aaron Fox by 35. If he continues at this pace, Daniels could finish the season with over 500 deflections, which would easily break the current single-season record of 302. Additionally, he is averaging an astonishing 3.7 steals per game, which would tie the all-time record for steals in a season.
Despite these eye-popping numbers, there is one significant obstacle standing in Daniels’ way: the Atlanta Hawks’ team defense. While Daniels himself is playing at an elite level, the team as a whole still struggles defensively, which could hurt his chances for DPOY recognition. Historically, individual defensive players on teams with poor defensive ratings tend to face an uphill battle when it comes to winning such prestigious individual awards.
