“Tyrese Maxey Sounds Off on Joel Embiid’s Troubling Mindset During 76ers’ Shaky Start”

The Philadelphia 76ers are in crisis mode as the 2024-25 NBA season begins with a disastrous 2-11 record, tying them for the league’s worst start alongside the Washington Wizards. Injuries to their All-Star trio—Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey—have compounded the team’s struggles.

However, Embiid’s performance has been particularly alarming. The former MVP has appeared in just three games, looking far from his dominant self, with underwhelming averages of 14.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. The Sixers have lost all three games with him on the court, raising concerns about his impact.

Adding to the turmoil, ESPN’s Shams Charania revealed that Maxey recently called out Embiid during a team meeting. The young star reportedly criticized Embiid for consistently being late to team activities, emphasizing how his lack of punctuality has affected the locker room and the coaching staff. This confrontation highlighted growing tensions, with insiders describing Embiid’s work habits as the “elephant in the room,” even within his close relationship with Maxey.

The meeting comes on the heels of an off-court incident involving Embiid and Philadelphia media member Marcus Hayes. The two had a physical altercation after Hayes made insensitive comments about Embiid’s late brother and young son. Hayes wrote that Embiid, who frequently cites fatherhood and his brother’s memory as inspirations, needed to “show up for work” to leave a meaningful legacy. In response, Embiid reportedly shoved Hayes and issued a stern warning to avoid further comments about his family.

While Embiid’s frustration with the personal remarks is understandable, the situation underscores deeper issues. His tardiness, questionable work habits, and apparent lack of focus are symbolic of the Sixers’ larger struggles. With the season rapidly spiraling, Philadelphia faces a steep challenge to recover both on the court and in the locker room.
